Blackbeard Sea of Shadows - Randall Standridge

Randall Standridge returns to the high seas with Blackbeard: Sea of Shadows, an exciting sequel to his popular Grade .5 work Blackbeard. Set in C minor, this Grade 1.5 adventure opens with a slow, mysterious introduction in 4/4 before launching into a swashbuckling voyage in 3/4 time.

Brief nods to “What Do We Do with the Drunken Sailor,” expanded rhythmic challenges, dotted quarter-note figures, and increased range demands raise the stakes for developing players. Creative percussion writing, chanting from the ensemble, a bold low brass feature, and melodic moments for every section bring the story vividly to life. Perfect for programs that call for drama and narrative flair, Blackbeard: Sea of Shadows delivers high-seas excitement from start to finish

Program Notes

Blackbeard: Sea of Shadows continues the adventures of the infamous pirate and his crew, following their introduction in the earlier work Blackbeard.  This programmatic work begins  in a slow and mysterious atmosphere as the crew sails into the Sea of Shadows, a region rumored to be haunted by ghostly ships, sea monsters, and other dangers lurking beneath the waves. Dark harmonies and subdued textures establish a sense of unease as the pirates venture deeper into these treacherous waters.  As the piece unfolds, the music shifts into a faster and more aggressive style, depicting the crew’s desperate fight to escape the dangers surrounding them. Driving rhythms and energetic lines capture the intensity of the battle as they struggle to survive and break free.

Listeners may also notice a subtle musical detail woven throughout the work. The title Sea of Shadows can be abbreviated as “SOS,” a well-known distress signal. The rhythmic pattern of SOS in Morse code appears at various points in the piece as a hidden nod to this cry for help.

Blackbeard: Sea of Shadows combines cinematic storytelling with accessible writing for young band, offering performers the opportunity to explore contrast, character, and narrative within a cohesive musical framework.  It was commissioned by and dedicated to all current and former student musicians of the Welty Middle School Band Program, New Philadelphia, Ohio, Jeffrey E.
