Fireborn - Randall Standridge
Brilliant and blazing, Fireborn by Randall Standridge is a fast-paced Grade 2 work that makes an immediate impact. Set in driving 4/4 time, the piece opens with a fiery fanfare before unfolding into radiant melodic moments colored by shifting harmonies and flashes of strident dissonance.
Active percussion and punchy rhythmic writing keep the music glowing with intensity, creating a work that feels bold and symphonic while remaining accessible to developing ensembles. Vivid and energetic, Fireborn is a powerful choice for concert or festival performance.

“Whatever your worst day has been, you survived it. You are here, aren’t you?”
That is a question I often ask people.
I have always been drawn to stories of heroes. Video games, comic books, fantasy films. The ones where a character rises from nothing, or discovers some hidden strength deep within themselves. Sometimes they have a mysterious past. Sometimes they do not yet realize who they are. But when the moment comes, they rise to meet it. I think a lot of us connect with that idea. We are all shaped by the challenges we face. Every difficult moment, every setback, every obstacle becomes part of who we are. In many ways, we are all still in the middle of our own story, still discovering what we are capable of becoming.
Fireborn is a musical reflection of that journey.
This fast-paced and aggressive work is built on driving rhythms, polyphonic lines, and bold harmonic language. The music pushes forward with intensity, capturing the energy and determination of a hero stepping into their power. Moments throughout the piece also pay homage to one of my favorite composers, Peter Mennin, whose influence can be heard in the contrapuntal writing and rhythmic vitality. The result is a piece that is both powerful and relentless, a musical portrait of strength forged through adversity.
Because sometimes, the hero of the story is not the one who never struggles, but rather the one who keeps on going.
Fireborn was originally premiered under the title Emerald Fire, and was commissioned by the Adams-Friendship Band Students & Community (WI) and their director, Derek Curless.
