Bold and distinctive, Sharp Corners by Wesley Cheang blends symphonic band writing with elements of jazz and R&B to create a truly unique musical voice. This Grade 4 work explores the idea of “resting dissonance,” where tension exists without the need for resolution, reflected through colorful harmonies and groove-driven textures.
Inspired by iconic jazz rhythms and contemporary influences, the piece features layered ensemble writing alongside optional parts for synthesizer, piano, and electric bass, allowing ensembles to shape a modern, fusion-inspired sound. Winner of 2nd Prize in the 2025 Concours International de Composition pour Orchestre d’Harmonie in Belfort, France, Sharp Corners is both intellectually engaging and sonically compelling—a standout choice for concert or festival performance.
