KNOW WHAT TYPE OF COMMISSION YOU WANT. Is it for a specific event/situation? Is there a particular style you want? Are there any instrumentation parameters that may be important? Are you open to any creative ideas that I have (these are usually the BEST commissions)? All of this information will be important when communicating with me initially.
HAVE A PLAN FOR FUNDING YOUR COMMISSION. How will the commission be funded? School funds? Band Boosters? Donors/Patrons? Partnering with other organizations for a consortium? This can usually be the most stressful aspect of the process, so have a solid plan in place.
KNOW THE TIMELINE. For the project, time will be essential. You need to think about when you want to receive the commission as well as the intended premiere date/due date to allow yourself enough time to prepare.
CONTACT ME. Once you have an idea of the above three steps, contact me and we will discuss: A) Can I fit it into my schedule, B) do I feel I am a good fit for the project, and C) what my ideas for the commission may be.
RELAX AND LET ME WORK. Once we have negotiated and signed a contract, I will set aside time on my calendar to work on your project. I have never been late on a commission in my life, so relax and let me create something amazing for you and your project.

We are very excited to invite you to join an exciting commissioning consortium project which will add a new Symphony for Band to the wind band repertoire! This new Symphony by composer Randall Standridge will be a 3 or 4 movement large scale symphony of 18 – 25 minutes in length written at a grade 5-5+ grade level, a work that would be appropriate for University, Community, and accomplished High School ensembles.
The completion date will be December 2022, and the symphony will be delivered to consortium members at that time. The Edina Concert Band will present the world premiere in March 2023, and consortium members will be able to list their performances as a “Consortium Premiere” in Spring, Summer, or Fall of 2023. All consortium members will have exclusive rights to this work through March 15, 2024.
Consortium Details: Symphony no.1, A Ghost Story
Randall’s description of the intended work: A ghost story is always about more than just the “ghost” aspect. A really great ghost story is a meditation on mortality, grief, love, loss, guilt, forgiveness, and transcendence. My goal with the work will be to evoke all of these emotions by tapping into both symphonic and cinematic traditions.
•Grade level: 5 – 5+
•Duration: 18 – 25 minutes
•Description: 3 – 4 movement, grade 5 – 5+, 18 – 25 minutes, standard wind band instrumentation, Piano/Synth, 7 percussion, and electro-acoustic elements . Any non-traditional instruments utilized will be cued for standard instruments to provide the maximum compatibility with any ensemble.
